| EDUCATION DESCRIPTION |
Three
separate public school districts serve Montezuma County. The
largest serves Cortez and the surrounding area including the
Ute Mountain Ute Reservation. The towns of Mancos and Dolores
also have school districts. There are two parochial schools.
San Juan Basin Technical School and Pueblo Community College,
Southwest Center, provide vocational technical training for
students in cooperation with the high schools and on a post-secondary
basis. The schools provide special courses on demand as requested
by local businesses. Fort Lewis College, an independent state-funded
four year liberal arts college, is located in Durango, forty-five
miles east of Cortez.
