Those
businesses needing to transport their wares by highway to markets
located from the Southeastern United States all the way west to central
and southern California, will experience few, if any problems due
to weather. No high passes impact access to south from Durango to
Interstate Highway 40. Area highways include US Hwy 550, US Hwy 160,
State Hwy 151, State Hwy 172 and State Hwy 140.
The
Durango/La Plata County Airport is located in La Plata County, 12
miles southeast of the City of Durango. Access to the airport is from
US Hwy. 172. It is a publicly owned commercial service facility operated
jointly by the City of Durango and La Plata County. The primary runway
exceeds 9,000 feet and is equipped with lights and navigational aids.
Daily service includes five non-stop United Express/Skywest flights
to Denver and four non-stop American West/Mesa Air flights to Phoenix.
Daily service to Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston commenced in Dec. 2001
on board American Eagle and Continental Express, respectively. General
Aviation and Air Freight also operate from La
Plata Field.
Animas
Airpark is located in La Plata County, four miles south of the City
of Durango, at an elevation of 6,690 feet. Access to the airport is
from County Road 213. It is a privately-owned general aviation airport
open to the public and operated by Animas Airpark, Inc. The facility
has a 5,000 foot long runway but does not have a terminal building.
In 1996, there were 9,110 annual operations.
