HOSPITAL DESCRIPTION:

Pagosa Springs has two family medical clinics staffed by MDs and Nurse Practitioners. The Dr. Mary Fisher Medical and Urgent Care Center operates as a family medical clinic and an urgent care center. The Pagosa Springs Family Medical Center is headed by Dr. Jim Pruitt. During regular hours, staff from both clinics are available for immediate care, and after hours access is through 911. A helipad means that emergency airlifts are readily available.

Serious emergencies are transported by ambulance or helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Durango or San Juan Regional Hospital in Farmington, New Mexico. Mercy Medical Center has been recognized as the number one rural hospital in Colorado and is the regional trauma center for Southwestern Colorado.

 RECREATION

Archuleta County is an outdoor paradise. There are two major wilderness areas within a few minutes of town with excellent hunting and year-round fishing.

Recreation opportunities include:

  • Chimney Rock Archeological Area—Ancestral Puebloan ruins located midway between Pagosa Springs and Navajo Lake. Take a trip back in time as you enjoy a guided tour and learn the historical culture of these Native Americans.
  • Echo Lake State Park—This well-stocked lake tests the expertise of all fishing enthusiasts.
  • Fred Harman Art Museum—Enjoy the original western paintings of Fred Harman, creator of Red Ryder and Little Beaver. Rodeo, movie and western memorabilia are also on display.
  • "Pagosah" Hot Mineral Springs and Baths—Since the days of the Indians, these mineral springs have been famous for their healing qualities and are reputed to be the world's hottest mineral springs.
  • Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park—Get an up-close view of native wildlife at this growing park.
  • Shopping—Pagosa Springs offers antiques, classic stoves, gift stores, jewelry, art galleries, health foods, gourmet items, books, sporting goods, western wear and much more.
  • Upper San Juan Historical Museum—A fascinating and extensive display of the early day Pagosa Springs area.
  • Waterfalls—Archuleta County has some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the state. There are at least 25 located in the area.
  • Wolf Creek Pass—Drive through the majestic San Juan National Forest across the Continental Divide at an elevation of 10,857 feet.
