The first impression
that one might have of Pagosa Springs, the largest town in Archuleta
County, is that it is like any other small Colorado town. A closer
look reveals people working and playing together in cooperation,
an area that welcomes newcomers and a community that makes every
attempt to facilitate smooth transition.
Hundreds
of years ago, Native Americans traveled to Pagosa Springs to bathe
in the relaxing hot springs. Many settlers joined them in the early
1890s. Today, tourism is the area's number one industry, and the natural
environment is the region's chief economic asset. Presently, the town
has numerous projects in development to promote Pagosa's unique history
and economy. The San Juan mountains offer majestic views, and winter
months offer a long ski season at Wolf Creek Ski Area. People also
come to Pagosa Springs for the relaxing, yet energetic, atmosphere
that is present in the area's everyday lifestyle.
